Functional Skills

English, Maths & ICT


The English, Maths and ICT courses we deliver lead to Functional Skills qualifications. The idea of Functional Skills is to provide learners with skills in useful aspects of English Maths and ICT, with the emphasis on "useful". Learners can achieve a standalone qualification at up to level 2, or as part of a specialist learning pathway; combining their qualifications with BTEC Apprenticeships, GCSE’s and NVQ’s.

 

 

                                                

 


Learners who have completed these courses will gain a basic understanding of English, Maths and ICT skills which are necessary component in the workplace as well as a mandatory requirement to progress to further study.

Course Outline 


English – Entry Level, 1 & 2



Reading
Two tasks to complete, learner will be required to read short texts and short-answer questions.
This will be internally assessed by the teacher.
   

Writing
Learners will complete two tasks, both providing
a single writing answer in response to a short text.


Speaking, Listening and Communication
Learners will complete an activity based on a simple discussion. This will be internally assessed by the teacher.   Learners will complete two activities based on discussions about familiar topics. This will be internally assessed by the teacher.
Learners will complete two activities; a familiar formal discussion and a familiar informal discussion. This will be internally assessed by the teacher.
     

 


Maths - Entry Levels 1 & 2



Learners will be assessed through a single on-screen exam, gaining skills in the following areas:
Representing
Understanding mathematical information in familiar context and situations

 Analysing

Use mathematics to obtain answers to simple given practical problems that are clear and routine.

Generate results that make sense for the task in hand.
Interpreting

Provide solutions to simple given practical problems in familiar contexts and situations.

 

Level 1
Learning outcomes

Understand and use whole numbers, understand negative numbers in practical contexts, add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages, solve simple problems involving ratio, f
ind mean and range.  

 

Level 2
Learning outcomes

Understand and use positive and negative numbers of any size in practical contexts, carry out calculations with numbers of any size in practical contexts to a given number of decimal places, understand and use equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages, use 2D representations of 3D objects, find area, perimeter and volume of
common shapes.


ICT - Entry Levels 1 & 2



Learners will be assessed through a single on-screen exam.

 

 

Learners will gain skills in the following:
Using ICT for a given purpose, recognise and use interface features, follow recommended safe practices, minimise the physical stress of seating, lighting and hazards, keep access information secure by using passwords.

 

Finding and selecting information 
Find and gather information from an ICT based source, text message, voicemail and on-screen information.

Developing, presenting and communicating information
Learn how to enter and edit single items of information, identify and correct simple errors, receive and open electronic
messages.
